President Vicente Fox Quesada dropped the prosecution of the mayor of Mexico City, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, at the beginning of May. The federal government had clearly been alarmed by the size of the silent march in support of the mayor on 24 April and the overwhelming
condemnation of its position by the international press. The government's retreat came in three stages. First Fox broadcast to the nation on 27 April to announce that he was replacing his attorney general, who had marshalled the case against López Obrador. Then the new attorney general announced, on 4 May, that, essentially, López Obrador had no case to answer. The final element in the retreat was a meeting between Fox and López Obrador on 6 May.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1909 words.
